Whilst planning our stay in Kircubright in Oct 2013 I intended to activate at least one Scottish summit. GM/SS-065 Cairnsmore of Fleet fitted into our visit quite well, it’s not a long distance from Kirkcudbright, has an easy ascent with defined paths (tramping over heather isn’t popular with Vicky).
GM/SS-065 Cairnsmore of Fleet – 711m, 4 points
Association: Scotland Region: Southern Scotland
Latitude: 54 58 33 N, Longitude: 4 20 31 W
Grid Reference: NX 502671, QTH Locator: IO74TX
The route to the summit is a gradual climb along clear paths (other than a short diagonal across a cow field). The walk is up through the forest then onto the open moorland.
It was quite a windy day and it was decided that it would be a quick activation then back down, I must admit at first I wasn’t too happy about this but quickly I got cold and came to accept the time I had.
I was operating as MM0SCU/P with my Wouxun handheld on 2m FM I wasn’t expecting amazing results but was happy to hear the chasers when I called CQ SOTA.
Chasers: G1OAE, 2E0LDF, M0DXT, GD8BUE
I wish I’d had more opportunity to activate some more summits whilst in the area but time was against me. Thanks again to the chasers for making my second activation a successful one.
